Chapter Thirty-Eight

It was just before the end of the third rotation when Doctors Allaine and Telpa entered the room. Tempest woke and rose to his feet, surprised he had slept all night.

“Good morning. I trust you finally were able to rest,” Dr. Telpa said, with a smile.

“Thank you, I did indeed rest.” Tempest laid his hand on the glass and looked at Shea. He could see no difference in her condition. What he needed to do was find a way to get his blood into her to speed her healing. He decided to ask Dr. Allaine if there was a way to do that without compromising her fragile condition. “Can you tell if there has been any change?”

Dr. Allaine answered. “According to the readouts I can see on the machines, she seems to be holding her own. Doctor Telpa is here to inject the new nerve cells into the line going to her spinal column. You can wait in the lobby or stay here if it does not bother you to watch.”

Tempest rubbed his hand over his face. “I need to stay here with her, so it will not bother me to watch a procedure that very well may allow her to walk again.”

Dr. Telpa spoke next. “Your devotion to this woman is inspiring. I wish all life mates were as concerned and protective. I find it refreshing.” He removed a large syringe from a pocket on the inside of his lab coat. A thick pinkish fluid filled the tube. He tapped it and depressed the plunger, removing any air.

Tempest hovered near the odd, lizard-like doctor as he inserted the needle into a thick line that was attached to Shea’s back. Dr. Telpa injected the fluid slowly until the tube was empty. Tempest continued to observe the pinkish fluid as it flowed through the thick line and disappeared into Shea’s body. It occurred to him that he might be able to introduce his blood into her the same way. He would ask Dr. Allaine as soon as Dr. Telpa went his way.

“Thank you both for the special care you have shown my bondmate thus far. You can never really understand what it means to have the best fighting for her life.” Tempest gave a short, half-bow to both doctors.

Dr. Allaine nodded. “I am beginning to gain that understanding.”

Tempest motioned for Dr. Allaine to stay and walked Dr. Telpa to the door.

“Is there anything else as it pertains to Shea’s care on your part?”

Dr. Telpa nodded and stepped into the hall. “I will check on her in a few days to see how the nerve cells are responding and whether or not she is regaining any sensations. I extended my vacation, so I can make sure her recovery is as it should be. If you don’t have any other questions for me, I have some appointments I must keep.”

Tempest shook his head and watched the nerve regenerist stride down the hall until he disappeared on the other side of the nurses’ station.
